The tissues in which the cells constantly divide are called meristematic tissues or meristems. They produce new cells. There are three types of meristems:

1. Apical
2. Lateral
3. Intercalary

Apical Meristems are present at the tip of the root and the shoot. This meristem is responsible for the increase in the length of roots and shoots, i.e. the vertical growth. The vertical growth is also referred to as primary growth.
The Lateral Meristems are responsible for the horizontal growth.
To summarise, the Apical meristem is responsible for the vertical growth.

Hope it helped you..
