The mean (informally, the “average“) is found by adding all of the numbers together and dividing by the number of items in the set

eg.

10 + 10 + 20 + 40 + 70 / 5 = 30.

The median is found by ordering the set from lowest to highest and finding the exact middle. The median is just the middle number: 20.

To find the mode, or modal value, it is best to put the numbers in order. Then count how many of each number. A number that appears most often is the mode.

eg.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 8, 9 here mode is 5
