Answer:

1. The Vedas are a large body of religious texts originating in ancient India. There are four Vedas: the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda and the Atharvaveda.

2. The Varna system in Dharma-shastras divides society into four varnas (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishya and Shudras). Those who fall out of this system because of their grievous sins are ostracised as outcastes (untouchables) and considered outside the varna system.

3. The Rig Veda is the largest and considered the most important of the collection, containing 1,028 hymns.

4. Some of the hymns in the Rigveda are in the form of dialogues. This is part of one such hymn, a dialogue between a sage named Vishvamitra, and two rivers, (Beas and Sutlej) that were worshipped as goddesses. A page from a manuscript of the Rigveda.
