Noted film maker Kikkeri Shamanna Lakshminarayana Swamy (KSL Swamy) popularly know Ravee died on Tuesday. He was 77. He is survived by his wife and noted actor B.V. Radha and daughter Dhanalakshmi.

In his 49-year celluloid career Swamy had directed as many as 37 films. Tugudeepa (1966) was his debut film. Savira Mettilu (2006), which he co-directed was his last film.

According to family sources, Swamy was suffering from respiratory problem and got treatment in a private hospital for 42 days. As he showed some signs of improvement, Swamy was brought back home on Monday. However, he breathed his last in the wee hours of Tuesday. His body was kept at his Horamavu residence for public viewing for some time, before shifting to Samsa Rangamandira in the premises of Ravindra Kalakshetra to facilitate film fraternity to pay tributes to departed film maker.

He reached both class and mass through his films including Gandhi Nagara (1968), Bhagya Jyothi (1975), Malaya Marutha (1986). His film Jamboo Savari won the National Award for the Best Children Film in 1989.

He assisted stalwarts in the Kannada film industry including G.V. Iyer and M.R. Vittal. He also worked closely with Puttanna Kanagal, iconic Kannada film maker. Swamy completed the Savira Mettilu and Masanada Hoovu which Kanagal left in the halfway.

Swamy, who assisted G.V. Iyer for Shankara, Madhva and Ramanuja series of films was preparing to direct Sri Shankara Digvijaya-Tatvamasi on the life and achievement of Adi Shankara, the Hindu Advita philosopher and theologian of early eighth century. Noted cinematographer G.S. Bhaskar, editor Suresh Urs, music composer Praveen Godkindi and script writer K.N. Venkatasubbara Rao were assisting him in the venture. He had plans to shoot the serial in various places in the country, where Shankara left his footprints.
