Explanation:

The formula is

where,

e=coefficient of restitution

h1=height at which ball is droped

h2=height at which ball bounces

Applying this formula we get h2=0.6

Given info : A lead ball is dropped from a height of 1m onto a thick flat plate of lead. If the coefficient of restitution is 0.16.

To find : what would be the bounce to a height ?

solution : here initially, ball is dropped from a height, h = 1 m.

velocity of approach, u = √2gh

let after striking onto a thick flat plate of lead, ball bounces x distance above.

so velocity of separation, v = √2gx

so coefficient of restitution, e = velocity of separation/velocity of approach

⇒0.16 = √(2gx)/√(2gh) = √(x/h)

⇒(0.16)² = x/1

⇒x = 0.0256 m = 25.6 mm

Therefore the ball bounces to a height of 25.6 mm.
