Answer:
Let the age of Jacob be x and and age of his son be y
According to first condition
x + 5 = 3(y + 5)
x + 5 = 3y + 15
x - 3y = 15 - 5
x - 3y = 10 ---> 1
According to second condition
x - 5 = 7(y - 5)
x - 5 = 7y - 35
x - 7y = -35 + 5
x - 7y = -30---> 2
Solving 1 & 2
x - 7y = -30
x - 3y = 10
- + -
------------
-4 y = -40
y = 40/4
y = 10
Substitute value of y = 10 in equation 1
x - 3y = 10
x - 3(10) = 10
x = 10 + 30
x = 40
So the present age of Jacob is 40 years and his son age is 10 years..
