★ Given :

Let the age of Jacob be 'x'

Let the age of son be 'y'

★ To find :

Present ages

★ Method :

Non 5 years later

x+5 = 3 (y+5)

x + 5 = 3y + 15

x - 3y = 10

x= 3y + 10 -(i)

and,

x - 5 = 7 (y-5)

x-5 = 7y -35

x-7y = -3 (ii)

Putting 1 in 2

3y + 10 -7y = -30

-4y = -30 -10

y = 40 ÷ 4

y = 10

★ Answer :

Present age of son = y = 10 years

Present age of father (Jacob) = 3y + 10 = 40 years
