The media reporting sometimes seriously shocks readers / viewers. It is not only visuals or pictures that may be disturbing but reconstructed details of how a particular incident happened, for example, a crime story.

A serious occurrence or an affair of public importance rightly attracts media attention, as it is their raison detré, and wide coverage helps in reaching the information to the public at large. It is also the case that media has often been successful where other institutions of the society have failed or at least lagged behind in taking the cudgels, in so far as it frequently highlights issues of public interest and accountability of public servants.

Having noted that, we may also look at the other side of the story.

There are increasingly situations where we hear of trial by media, paid news etc. This may perhaps appear to be a cynical view but even sober observers are won’t to moan that difference between news and views is progressively getting blurred. That is because display of judgmental ‘power’ by sections of the media is too much evident and many especially from the electronic media are responsible for such perception.

Such reporting surfaces on several occasions; it has a short shelf life though and recedes to the position of a foot note quickly. One recent instance is that of a respected college principal in Delhi under severe media attack. The incident involved the unfortunate and terribly sad death of an ex-employee of that college who had committed self-immolation. It so happened that she had filed a case of sexual harassment couples of years ago, which was enquired and decided by various agencies including statutory bodies like Delhi Commission for Women.
