Regular Homework, A Necessity Or Not?

Everyday, we hear students of all age groups complaining about the Jupiter-sized homework they've got to do. Tell a kid to do his/her homework for the next day, and they'll instantly groan and wail and whimper and weep for your 'cruelty'.

But, before you start nagging and hitting and forcing him/her to do it, think for a second. What makes them so not want to do it? What makes them hate it with all their heart?

Is it just because they find it difficult? The answer is No. They don't hate it because it's difficult, they hate it because they're made to hate it. Confused? well, you must be. They are made to believe that Learning is a burden they must carry till they earn a 'good degree'. They are told 'what you learn only matters if you are a topper'. They are told, it doesn't matter if they understand something or not, but it is very important for them to mug it up and write it in their exams.

And if they fail to do their homework because they didn't understand it, they are scolded, and punished for their "not being serious" and their lack of "interest".

But, interest just doesn't pop up like that. It grows slowly. And it grows, if it is let to grow. And, we can let it grow, if we stop forcing tons of homework on them, and start teaching them to explore and observe. Yes, exploration and observation teach a lot more than a textbook. Newton, Einstein, Faraday, Bose, and many more didn't give their theories because they read it in a book. Their theories were born out of several years of exploration and observation. So, at the tender age of 5 - 15, we must prevent the burden of homework to kill the curiosity, and the will to learn. Instead, we must let them grow, we must let their curiosity get the best of them, and we must let them "learn" through nature. If their energy and curiosity and enthusiasm at this age is harnessed instead of killed, they themselves will become great students in the near future.
