Students should be allowed to carry their mobile handsets to school

I wish a great morning to everyone sitting here; honorable guests, esteemed judges, respected teachers, and my dear friends, I am here to debate on ‘Students should be allowed to carry their mobile handsets to school.’ I am going to expatiate against the motion.

I strongly feel children are too reckless to use mobile phones or mobile phones purposefully. I would also like to ask you a very relevant question? What is the most common complaint of parents and teachers these days? Well, it is about the mobiles abuse! Most of the children nowadays are abusing mobile phones by misusing them. Most Parents on PTM days at schools are discussing children’s addiction to smartphones. They spend hours playing PUBG, whatsapping, faceboking, youtubing, instagramming, and surfing the net purposelessly! I am sure all of you will agree with me on this point.

Now the question that rises from this situation is, if children abuse mobile phones at home, won’t they do the same at school? If children were responsible and judicious, they would be using mobile phones wisely. But they don’t. If children are allowed to carry mobile phones during school hours, it will distract them more from their studies. They don’t have the discretion and the self-restraint to use it rightly.

I have another argument against allowing children to carry mobile phones during school hours. This has something to do with their health. Electronic mobile phones emit detrimental radiation which affects eyesight, concentration, fatigue, headaches, sleep disturbance and many health related issues. If children are allowed to use mobile phones freely, they will misuse it on the pretext of studies.  Inexperienced and prone to temptations as they are they may get lured by rampant obscenity available on internet. This will have a very negative impact on the impressionable minds of our young children, leading them astray.

I strongly believe children should be kept away from the negative influences of mobile phones. Rather, parents, teachers and the government must formulate a strategy to curb fast growing negative influence of mobile phones on the minds of our youth. Our youth is the future of our nation. We cannot allow this youth to waste their precious time on playing PUBG or useless and mind corrupting websites. The same time must be spent on studying, researching and developing leadership or other life-skills. It is our moral duty as well as responsibility to lead our children on the right path and teach them to make best use of these wonderful mobile phones to improve themselves only. They should be inculcated that their brain and minds are infinite times better than mere mobile phones. Great personalities such as Einstein, Dr. Kalam, Newton, Richard Ebright, and many others did not use mobile phones to become great; they used their brains and circumstances only.

Hence I conclude by reaffirming children should not be allowed any freedom to carry mobile phones during school hours.
