vii) A wire of mild steel as initial length 1.5m
and diameter 0.60mm gets extended by
HE 6.3 mm when a certain force is applied to
it. If Young's modulus of mild steel is 2.1
x 1011 N/m², calculate force applied.

Answer:

250 N

Explanation:

Use Young's modulus formula

Y = FL/(Ae)

Where,

  • Y = Young's modulus
  • F = Force acting on wire
  • L = Length of wire
  • A = Area of cross section of wire
  • e = Change in length (elongation)

From above formula

F = YAe / L

= Y(πr²)e/L

= [2.1 × 10¹¹ N/m² × 3.14 × (0.60/2 × 10^-3 m)² × 6.3 × 10^-3 m ]/ (1.5 m)

≈ 250 N
