Drona was answerable only to the throne of Hastinapur.

He traded his Vidya to get rid of his economical misery. Hastinapur and the then ruler Dhritarashtra agreed to this conjecture only on the condition that henceforth Drona's entire dedication should be towards the throne of Hastinapur.

Eventually when the war broke out, it was Dhritarashtra who was on the throne of Hastinapur and therefore Drona had to fight on the Kaurava side.
