Read the following passage and answer the questions as given below.
An Englishman, Arthur Young, travelled through France during the years from 1787 to 1789 and
wrote detailed descriptions of his journeys. He often commented on what he saw.
"He who decides to be served and waited upon by slaves, ill-treated slaves at that, must be fully
aware that by doing so he is placing his property and his life in a situation which is very different
from that he would be in, had he chosen the services of free and well-treated men. And he who
chooses to dine to the accompaniment of his victim's groans, should not complain if during a riot
his daughter gets kidnapped or his son's throat is slit.'
1. What message is Arthur Young trying to convey here?
2. What does he mean when he speaks of "slaves' ?
3. Who is being Criticised?
4. Mention about those dangers which he felt in the situation of 1787.

About this Title:
Young was an 18thC pioneer in the detailed observation of economic conditions in the countryside and the collection of statistical data relating to agriculture. He was extraordinarily lucky in being in France on the eve of and during the early part of the French Revolution. In his dairies he gives close observations of the social, political and economic conditions of the French countryside as it was convulsed by violent revolution. This makes his Travels in France (1792) particularly valuable to historians.
