The ISI was established in the year 1947. It has been renamed as the 'Bureau of Indian Standards'. Its main objective is to lay down quality standards for consumer and industrial goods. A producer who wants to adopt a standard for his product has to obtain a license from the ISI under its marking scheme.

The mark certifies that a product conform to an Indian standard developed by the Indian bureau of Indian standard.
