let total Rs 100 currency notes = x

and Rs 500 currency notes = y

Given ,
______________________________
total money in Vijay's purse =Rs 5000
______________________________

according to question ,

100 x + 500 y = 5000. ________eq(1)

_______________________________
also given that number of Rs 100 currency notes = twice of Rs 500 currency notes + 1
_______________________________

x = 2 y +1 __________________eq(2)

Put value of ' x ' in eq. (1 ) , we get

100 ( 2 y + 1 ) + 500 y = 5000

200 y + 100 + 500 y = 5000

700 y = 4900 => y = 7 notes

now put value of ' y' in eq. ( 2 ) , we get

x = 2( 7 ) + 1 = 15 => x = 15 notes

therefore ,

Rs 100 currency notes = x = 15 notes

Rs 500 currency notes = y = 7 notes

Define x:

Let the number of Rs 500 notes be x

The number of Rs 100 notes = 2x + 1

Solve x:

The total amount is Rs 5000

500x + 100 (2x + 1) = 5000

500x + 200x + 100 = 5000

700x = 4900

x = 7

Find the number of each type of notes:

Number of Rs 500 = x = 7

Number of Rs 100 = 2x + 1 = 2(7) + 1 = 15

Answer: There are 7 Rs 500 notes and 15 Rs 100 notes.
