let no. of bananas in lot A be x and the number in lot B be y
2x/3 + y = 400 ___ (i)
x + 4y/5 = 460 ___ (ii)
(i) * 4/5:
8x/15 + 4y/5 = 320
(ii) - (i):
(x + 4y/5) - (8x/15 + 4y/5) = 460 - 320
x - 8x/15 = 140
(15x - 8x)/15 = 140
7x/15 = 140
x/15 = 20
x = 300
from (ii):
300 + 4y/5 = 460
4y/5 = 160
y/5 = 40
y = 200
therefore the total number of bananas was 500 bananas, 300 in lot A and 200 in lot B.
