Once upon a time there were three friends- a tortoise and a pair of geese. They spent all day by the lake together, listening to the tortoise’s tales (he had a lot to say) and were extremely fond of one another. Unfortunately, their lake started drying up. There was hardly any water in it now. No water meant no fish. They would starve!
The geese decided to migrate to another lake where there was plenty of food and water. The problem was that they could neither leave their dear friend the tortoise behind, nor take him along. There was no way a tortoise could fly!
Days passed. The water level in the lake went down further. They had to do something. Finally the geese had an idea. They would get a stick. Each goose would hold one end of the stick in its mouth. The tortoise could hold the stick in the middle with his mouth and hang on to it. That way, when they flew, the tortoise would also fly with them.
The tortoise was scared, but agreed. There was no other way out. The geese told the talkative tortoise not to open his mouth no matter what happened. The tortoise agreed. So, the trio flew off.
It was a strange sight. No one had seen anything like that before. Some children spotted the three of them in the air and started clapping and whistling. The tortoise got annoyed.
“Do they think we work in a circus?” He thought to himself.
“Stop…”, he screamed at the children, but never managed to finish his sentence.
The tortoise had lost his grip on the stick and fell to the ground. The geese looked for him everywhere, but didn’t find him. Till date no one knows what happened to the tortoise!
Moral: Silence is golden.
