Find the time taken for the bus ride:

Speed = 45 miles/hour

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Time = x/45

Find the time taken for the walk:

Speed = 5 miles/hour

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Time = x/5

solve x:

Given that the total time taken is 12 hours

x/45 + x/5 = 12

2/9 x = 12

x = 12 ÷ 2/9

x = 54 miles
