Vinod wanted to see the stars of the night sky. He knows that he needs a telescope to see those distant stars. He finds out that the telescopes, which are made of lenses, are called refracting telescopes and the ones which are made of mirrors are called reflecting telescopes. So he decided to make a refracting telescope. He bought two lenses, L1 andL2. out of which L1 was bigger and L2 was smaller. The larger lens gathers and bends the light, while the smaller lens magnifies the image. Big, thick lenses are more powerful. So to see far away, he needed a big powerful lens. QUESTION 1 : Based on the diagram shown, what kind of lenses would Prashant need to make the telescope? *
Concave lenses
Convex lenses
Bifocal lenses
Flat lenses

Convex Lens would be used

Explanation:

  • Option(b) convex lens will be used here to make the telescope.
  • Convex lens bends light rays , and in the question , the lens gathers and bends light. Therefore the lens in question is a convex lens.
  • A convex lens is basically a converging lens where rays of light parallel to the lens converge after passing through the lens.
  • To produce a magnified image , the object here must be between the lens and the focus .
  • Therefore one lens bends the light rays and another helps in magnifying the image thereby making a refracting telescope to see far away objects with clarity.
