Given :    the petrol price in India rose by 10 %.

Before the rise, the price was Rs.70/litre.

Mr. Khanna commutes   1000kms per month at a mileage of 14 km/liter.

To Find : Calculate how much of travelling must he reduce to nullify the effect

Solution:

the price was Rs.70/litre.

1000kms per month at a mileage of 14 km/liter.

Petrol required = 1000/14

Total Expenditure = 70 * 1000/14  = 5000 Rs

Let say travelling reduced = X km

Distance = 1000 - X  km

Petrol = ( 1000 - X)/14

Petrol price = 70 + (10/100)70  = 77 Rs

Expenditure =  77 *  ( 1000 - X)/14

= 11( 1000 - X)/2

11( 1000 - X)/2 =  5000

=>  11( 1000 - X) = 10000

=> 11000 - 11X = 10000

=> 11X = 1000

=> X = 1000/11

=> X = 90.91  km   travelling must he reduce to nullify the effect
