Answer :-

First of all, what are Viruses ?

Ans - Viruses are the simplest forms of life i.e. they are Acellular entities (Not cells).

The structure of viruses is as follows :-

  • Unlike most other microbes, viruses have no Organelles, no Cytoplasm and no Nucleus.

  • All viruses consist of two basic components - A nucleic acid core called the "Genome" and a protien by which the genome is surrounded, the "Capsid".

  • Each viral genome generally consists of only one type of nucleic acid i.e. either R.N.A. or D.N.A., but not both at a time.

  • The capsid layer protects the genome and is sub-divided into individual Protien units called "Capsomers".

  • "Herpesviruses" consist of 162 capsomers.

  • "Adenoviruses" consist of 252 capsomers.

  • Many animal viruses and some plant viruses are bounded by an outer flexible membrane known as the "Envelope".

  • The "Envelope" in viruses is derived from the host and is composed of lipids and protiens.
