Viruses have some characteristics of living organisms.Such as, viruses contain nucleic acids and proteins. Inside living cells, viruses can reproduce ( by process other then mitosis).
Viruses show the characteristics of non- living organisms when they are present outside the living organisms. Such as, survive for billions of years. They can survive very high temperatures, freezing cold etc., cannot move and cannot reproduce.
This is the reason why viruses placed on the border line between living and non living things.
