Viruses are smaller than bacteria it is because, their structural organization is simpler than the bacteria and they are also smaller in size too.

When we compare the cell organelles of virus and bacteria, the former has protein coat and either DNA or RNA, the latter has cell organelles such as nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, etc.

Apart from this virus cannot survive without a host. They need a host for their survival. But bacteria can grow in any favorable environment. The size of the bacteria is expressed in nanometer, whereas size of the virus is expressed in micrometer.
