1)Nucleus is a large spherical body generally lying at the centre of a cell .It has a double layered covering called nuclear membrane.
2)The nuclear membrane has pores which allow the transfer of material from inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
3)The nucleus contains rod -shaped chromosomes, which are visible only during cell division. They contain information for inheritance of features from parents to the offspring in the form of DNA (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid) molecules.
4)Chromosomes consists of DNA and protein. .
5) The functional segments of DNA are called genes. In a non-dividing cell, the DNA is present as part of chromatin material. Chromatin material is visible as entangled mass of thread like structures. Whenever the cell is about to divide, the chromatin material gets organised into chromosomes.
Function:-
1) Chromosomes play an important role in inheritance.
2) DNA molecules have the information required for constructing and organising cells.
3) The nucleus plays a major role in cellular reproduction.
4) It also plays a crucial part, in determining the way the cell will develop and what form it will exhibit at maturity, by directing the chemical activities of the cell.
5) It is the controlling centre of the cell.
