Metal is shapped in a blacksmith shop by heating the metal to the point it becomes plastic. The hot metal is then shaped by using different parts of the anvil and striking it with a hammer.

When metals are treated with heat, they tend to become soft and as the heat is continuosly supplied it starts to melt. Such a point where the solid melts to liquid state is known as melting point.

This point differs from metal to metal.

In large industries the metals are converted into molten liquid with a help of high heat supply and are dropped into molds of desired shapes.

Whereas a blacksmith couldn't supply so much heat with his limited equipemts. So, he heats the metal and then beats up usually with a slegde hammer, till it brought up to the desired shape.
