A Mandir is believed to be the home of God. You will see images of deites called murti. There is a main shrine, called a garbha griha. There are also side shrines with offerings, e.g. food, flowers, and coloured powders. Hindus believe the universe is made up of 5 elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether(space). They are represented in the arti ceremony with 5 lamps. The arti ceremony is the way that hindus show their love and devotion to God. The shrine is called the murti, an image of the main god. Offerings are left for the gods as a sign of respect. Worshippers ring a bell when they enter the Mandir. To show respect, Hindus take off their shoes when entering the Mandir.
