               Visit to an Art Exhibition

Art has always fascinated me. A piece of art – a sculpture or a painting, silently says so much. It represents the time, place, context and the people who created it. I always believed this but saw it unfold before my eyes when I recently went for Durgabai Vyam’s art exhibition in Delhi.

The exhibition showcased the Gond tradition of tribal art that traces its origins to villages in Madhya Pradesh. Durgabai’s art is embedded in tribal folklore and mythology. As an art form, Gond art is inextricably intertwined with activities of the Gond community. Nature is also an important motif in their art.

Durgabai Vyam has helped promote Gond art and continues to spread it through her illustrations and prints. The exhibition sold beautiful prints of her work and brought home the immense value of the painstaking work done by artists and artisans.
