In 1664, Surat was a wealthy port city in Gujarat, controlled by a small Mughal force.
Chhatrapati Shivaji planned the attack on Surat in such a way that the Mughal army, nor the people had a chance to react. They were caught by surprise and Shivaji’s Maratha forces plundered and looted the city for six days. They later transferred the loot to Shivaji’s fort in Raigad and most of the city was burned down.
