Vitamin C is essential for the prevention of scurvy. Combustion of 0.2000g of vitamin
C gives 0.2998g of CO2 and 0.0819g of H20. What is the empirical formula of vitamin C?
(please show the steps also)

Answer:

mass of H₂O should be 0.0819

Suppose vitamin is X.

X  +  O₂    ⇒    CO₂  +   H₂O

0.200               0.2998     0.0819

Molar mass of CO₂  =  12+2×16

                                 = 44 g

Amount of crabon in 44g of CO₂ = 12g

Amount of carbon in 0.2998g CO₂ = 12/44 × 0.2998g

                                                         = 0.0818g

Molar mass of H₂O = 18g

Amount of carbon in 0.0819g of H₂O = 2/18×0.0819g

                                                              =0.0091 g

% of carbon = 0.0818/0.2000×100 = 40.9%

% of hydrogen = 0.0091/0.200×100 = 4.55%

% of O = 100-( 40.9+4.55)

            = 54.55%
