An unwanted visitor
Vivek and Vanshika were having food when suddenly their dog Spark started barking. Their parents were out on a party. They had been playing in the garden a while back. Hunger brought them to the kitchen.
They had left the garden door open as they would run back after eating. Spark would not stop barking. He was looking at the door and barking ferociously, Vivek was a timid boy he was too scared to go towards Spark. But his sister was just the opposite. She was brave and dynamic. She ran to Spark to see what was bothering him.
In spite of her courage she gave a loud shriek and almost fainted. Vivek immediately hid under the table and pulled the table cloth to hide himself.
Spark's barking grew louder. He heard his sister running inside and dialling a number. Soon the door bell rang and Vivek saw heavy boots scampering past towards the garden.
Time ticked slowly by loud and periodic like Vivek's heart beat. There was a lot of hurly burly and finally there came the sound of jubilation. All shouted 'Bravo'!
Vivek mustered courage and came out from his hiding. There before him were two strong men shuffling something into a sack. They invited him to have a peep. He looked inside. There in a big coil lay a hissing snake.
Vanshika explained that Spark was the hero that day. He had spotted a cobra in the garden. It was a full grown Indian Cobra. If Spark hadn't spotted it, it could have been a fatal night for the children.
Vanshika had the presence of mind to call the emergency number. The forest department had sent two snake catchers whose job was to catch snakes in domestic areas and leave them in the forest.
What an unexpected and unwelcome visitor the children and Spark had that day!
