Volcanoes actually occur where there are some spaces in the tectonic plates i.e. mostly at their boundaries or in rare cases due to some kind of fracture in the tectonic plate(hot spot hypothesis). Generally tectonic plate boundaries are of three types, namely divergent, convergent and transform plates. Volcanoes occur mostly in these boundaries. Where as mountains occur mostly in Convergent boundary. Most active volcanoes at present are not actually present in mountain regions, rather maximum volcanoes actually lie under the ocean.
