Hard Times is a novel by Charles Dickens. It is the 10th and shortest novel of Charles Dickens. It was first published in 1854. novel

It is a little different from his other novels. One reason is this that it is the shortest of his novels, barely a quarter of length of the others. Especially those that were written immediately before or after it. Second it has neither preface nor illustrations. And it is his only having no scenes set in London.

Charles Dickens used the characters of Sissy and Bitzer to contrast fact and fancy. Sissy is the daughter of the circus performer. She does badly at school. She is unable to remember the facts that she is taught.  But she is genuinely virtuous and fulfilled. Mr. Gradgrind is a very practical person. Sissy gets so disturbed by his intellectual limitations that she fails to define a horse to even speak. On the other hand, the other student of Gradgrind's class, Bitzer explain the description of a horse as 'quadruped graminivorous'. He gets appraisal from Gradgrind. According to Gradgrind, fancy and imagination are irrelevant to education and are just tools to slow down the process of learning. For him, his syudents are the ' little pitchers ' that are to be filled with facts only.
