W is a compound containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

a. W contains 57.1% carbon and 4.8% hydrogen by mass and the rest are oxygen.

Calculate the empirical formula of W

b. A 0.194g sample of W reacts completely with 18.5 cm3 of 0.250 mol/dm3 KOH.

Answer:

please follow me As the compound is containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen the expected compound is an aldehyde, alcohol, or either.

As the required compound is completely oxidized, the required compound is alcohol or aldehyde.

∴ The required compound is CH

3

CHO (Acetaldehyde ) and its molecular weight is 44.

We know that when aldehydes are completely oxidized they give carboxylic acid.

CH
