⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ answer

  • Dispersion of Light' can be defined as the splitting of white light when it passes through a glass prism into its constituent spectrum of colors (i.e. violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red
  • The rays of light scatters only after it strikes with the particles present in atmosphere such as dust particles, air molecules and water droplets. Therefore air particles play an important role in scattering of light.

a) When white light is passed through a glass prism it splits into its spectrum of colours and this process of white light splitting into its constituent colours is termed as dispersion.

The constituents of the white light are (in order) violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

b) The rays of light scatter only after they strike with the particles present in atmosphere such as dust particles, air molecules and water droplets. Therefore air particles play an important role in scattering of light.

A very good example can be Tyndall effect.
