One of the most memorable and popular characters, The Common Man is the
creation of the world-famous cartoonist R.K. Laxman. Rasipuram Krishnaswami
Laxman was born on 24 October 1921 in Mysore. He was the youngest of the six
brothers and he had a sister too. The famous author R.K. Narayan was his eldest
brother. R.K. Laxman was very fond of drawing and sketching in his childhood
and would often cover floors and walls of his house with drawings. As Laxman
grew up he decided to pursue a career as an artist. He got his degree in Art from
University of Mysore. He was appointed as cartoonist by The Times of India in

1947. His famous cartoon character The Common Man, a balding
bespectacled clad in a dhoti and a shirt representing the ordinary citizen of India.
the world-renowned artist's favorite bird was the crow. He was awarded the Padma
