The leaf colour of a certain plant is controlled by one gene. For the gene, the
allele G = orange and g = green. You have a plant with orange leaves, but do not
know whether the plant's genotype is GG of Gg. If you cross your unknown plant
with one of the plants whose genotype is listed below, you will be able to determine
your unknown's genotype. With which plant should you cross it?
(1) GG
(2) Gg
(3) gg
(4) A plant of same species

You should cross it with a plant of the genotype gg.

  • When a plant with 'GG' genotype will be crossed with 'gg' then the resulting offspring will all have orange colour as all offsprings will have the genotype 'Gg.'

  • However, when a plant with 'Gg' genotype is crossed with a plant having 'gg' genotype then 50 percent of the plants will have' Gg 'genotype and the other 50 percent would have 'gg' genotype. This means that half the plants will have orange color and the other half would have green color.
