Skills    needed by radiologists include the ability to closely follow directions given to them by doctors and the ability to multitask when performing X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. Some radiologists mix their own X-ray chemicals, and so they must be able to follow chemical recipes precisely. Some radiologists not only diagnose diseases and conditions, but also treat certain illnesses using radiology equipment. Radiologists must work with doctors and be able to understand treatment methods and apply them to the patient. They must also be able to think critically when working with doctors to come up with treatment options and when diagnosing conditions.

Temperament

Radiologists should have certain temperament traits to be able to fulfill the job duties. They should be flexible, as many work long hours, as well as in the evenings and on the weekends, and some are on call during different times. They should also be empathetic and compassionate when dealing with sick and injured patients, especially when delivering a bad diagnosis. While radiology departments do their best to prevent a radiologist's exposure to the radiation, the methods are not foolproof and radiologists must be willing to accept the risk of minor radiation exposure.

Physical

Radiologists must have physical stamina, as they spend most of the day on their feet. At times, radiologists need to lift, maneuver and position people who cannot move themselves, so need physical strength and abilities to perform these duties. Because radiologists work with sick individuals on a daily basis and run the risk of contracting illnesses, they should be in good physical health and not have compromised immune systems.
