At the first instance, the mariners thought that the albatross had brought them good wind and the Ancient mariner had made a wrong deed. They were scolding the Ancient Mariner for the loss they caused.
Suddenly, the wind that was lacking at that point of time, suddenly started to blow and again the mariners started to praise the ancient mariner saying that he had a good deed by killing the albatross.
Later we understand that the mariners felt that albatross was actually a good sign that was helping them in navigation. But after it's death, they suffered a lot and the ancient mariner hangs the albatross to express guilt and sorrow.
