Let the normal speed be x.

The speed he walks with now is : 3/4x

Let the usual time be t.

The time he takes now is :

t + 2.5

The man walks the same distance every time.

Distance = speed × time

For both we have :

xt for normal speed.

3/4x(t + 2.5) for the reduced speed.

3/4tx + 1.875x

= 0.75tx + 1.875x

We equate the two as follows :

0.75tx + 1.875x = tx

1.875x = tx - 0.75tx

1.875x = 0.25tx

Divide through by 0.25x :

7.5 = t

Normal time is 7\frac{1}{2} hrs

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the normal speed be x.

The speed he walks with now is : 3/4x

Let the usual time be t.

The time he takes now is :

t + 2.5

The man walks the same distance every time.

Distance = speed × time

For both we have :

xt for normal speed.

3/4x(t + 2.5) for the reduced speed.

3/4tx + 1.875x

= 0.75tx + 1.875x

We equate the two as follows :

0.75tx + 1.875x = tx

1.875x = tx - 0.75tx

1.875x = 0.25tx

Divide through by 0.25x :

7.5 = t

Normal time is 7\frac{1}{2}
