She felt the women should learn to plant trees. So she asked the foresters to teach the women in her locality how to plant trees. The illiterate women could not understand the complicated theories and methods taught by the foresters. So, Wangari encouraged the women to use their common sense to plant trees like all other plants they planted. In the beginning it was difficult, but gradually they succeeded. With their reforestation drives, they were able to cover a large area under forest cover; and they could use the wood from the forest to meet their needs.
