Here,the poet is Dr.APJ Abdul kalam .

He wrote the poem,entitled as my mother,in the memory of his mom.

In this extract,I remember refers to the poet's memory of the war days as world was II was going on when the poet was about nine years old.at that time he had to help his family as they were facing poverty because of the war.so,kalam had to get up early in the morning and do extra chores than the other school children.he had to go to the Arab teaching school the to the saintly teacher near the temple,and to the railway station road to collect and distribute newspapers to the temple city citizens,and he had to do several other works too.

So kalam referrs life as a challenge and toil during the war days..
