A husband and his wife board a small train carriage in Italy at dawn,they five other people who had spent a night on the train. The wife is in deep mourning.
The passengers help decide to help her by making room for her.Her husband checks on her but she does not respond. he says that their only son would be sent to war in three days and they were on their way to see him off.
A passenger comments that he has three nephews and two sons on the front,this prompts the husband to insist that they’re risking their only son. A passionate debate about who among them is sacrificing the most ensuesThe husnabd contends that one who loses one son has another left to console him.However, the other pasenger responds by saying that such a man can not end his misery by his own hand and that he has an obligation to live for his remaining son.
An old man,interrupts the conversation in with a speech. He declares that their children do not belong to them. The children have interests of their own, and this includes the love for their country which they would gladly fight for. He goes on to say that they do not require tears to be shed on their behalf since they would die happy. Dying young and happy is what one should strive for to escape the bore dom and disillusionment of life.He states that he does not mourn the death of his own son.He stops talking and becomes emotional.
The other passengers are in consesus with him. The wife previously, inconsolable finds strength in his words. She listens attentively as the old man gives the narrates how his son died heroically for King and Country, with no regrets. The old man is congratulated for his stoicism and bravery.
The wife ask the old man, “Then… is your son really dead?” The old man stares at her and is unable to answer. He realizes that his son was gone forever and he weeps incosolably.
