1 As the surroundings of the place were severely cold the air or the particles which were present in the air from the burnt wood.

When the wood is burnt the unburnt particles are in the air and also when wood is burnt it produces smoke

So in reference to the surroundings and the smoke produced the family felt suffocated and when the windows were open the air got a way to move in and out the house.
