Answer:In the early 15th Century, most the nations of Europe were desperately interested in expanding the cultural legacy of the Crusades, and in the travels of Marco Polo. Many were anxious to make contact with the Far East for purposes of expanding an exchange of goods and ideas. But because the Muslim Ottoman Empire had taken control of what is now Turkey, they had to seek out a sea route either over or around Africa. In 1488, the Portuguese, led by Bartholomew Diaz, did just that, though it was time-consuming and extremely arduous. But curiously, he contemplated a medieval world view of three connected continents that could only be crept around very carefully. The maps of the day still showed dragons and vast blank areas.

Now by this point Columbus had already been proposing, for five years, a much more daring and revolutionary approach, almost inconceivable at the time. He believed he could travel due west across the Ocean Sea (the Atlantic) to sail directly to Japan or China. The problem with this approach was not that they thought the world was flat (that notion had been rejected by the Greeks 1,500 years before), but how large the world was. Because Columbus underestimated the earth's size by about 25 percent, he envisioned a much shorter and more viable journey. Quite simply, Columbus was wrong, those who rejected him were more accurate, and there the story pauses. Columbus waited in poverty for four more years, and Europe waited paralyzed in its Medieval world view.
