No Lord Ullin's daughter's decision to elope with her lover was an unfortunate decision on her part. It is true that Lord Ullin was against his daughter's love for the chieftain. But as a dearly loved daughter she should have been patient and try to convince him about her love and her inability to live without her lover. Lord Ullin, like any other parent was hurt by his daughter taking the most important decision of her life without asking him.
She failed to understand her love for her. Like every child, she saw only the rough side of her father. But the last scene proves his great love for his daughter. Lord Ullin lamenting for his daughter and calling her back leaves a pathetic image of a bereaved father. He was ready to do anything for her. Only, he wanted her alive and hail and hearty. If she had taken time to make him understand her pain when she was separated from her beloved, eventually he would have come round, unable to see her in pain. In eloping with her lover she destroyed herself, her lover and her father's life for ever.
