Shashanka became the first sovereign king of an united polity of a region of Bengali known as  the Gauda Kingdom. Yes, it is alleged that Sasanka was very hostile to Buddhism. However, the fact remains disputed till date.

Explanation:

  • A text from the twelfth century states that Shashanka was the oppressor of Buddhism and had ruined many Buddhist stupas in Bengal. It is alleged that Shashanka cut down the bodhi tree from the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya where Buddha had discovered the enlightenment.
  • Hiuen Tsang cited some of the anti-Buddhist practices in Shashanka. He said that Shashanka was a powerful supporter of the Brahmanic faiths and a committed Shaiva and had no patience with Buddhism, which was patronized by a rich mercantile elite and no less than his sworn enemy Harsavardhana himself. These acts of Shasanka had suppsoedly wounded the Buddhists sentiments of his time.
  • Yet it is worth noting that  the thriving of Nalanda Buddhist University, where Hiuen Tsang  had studied for some time, and the presence of various monasteries, such as Raktamrttika-Mahavihara, in the Shashanka capital, Karnasuvarna, kingdom of Shashanka, goes counter to Hiuen Tsang's claims.
  • Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, an historian, argues Hiuen Tsang's narrative is dubious because decades later, after the "supposed persecution" it was written and it is "unsafe"  to acknowledge the historical claims recorded in the text."
  • However, Radhagovinda Basak, another historian  says that there is no reason to believe that this Buddhist author of the 12th century had a feeling of illness with Shashanka and that he'd have had cause to describe those events that took in the 7th century.
