My opinion is that implementation of reservations as per their recommendations was not correct. It was unfair to a majority of the society.
Mandal Commission was set up on Jan 1 in year 1979 by then Prime Minister Late Sri Morarji Desai. The commission was headed by then Member of Parliament Bhindeswari Prasad Mandal from Bihar. Mandal commission was started and pushed forward by National Janata Party.
The Mandal commission was set up to identify in the country, various socially, economically and educationally backward castes and classes. The people belonging to these castes and classes were to be classified under OBC or Other Backward Classes. Then they were recommended for 27% reservation in jobs in the government offices and public sector undertakings. The idea is to give a social lift upwards to the other backward classes.
Supreme Court stayed the government’s order in 1990. In 1992 the Supreme Court upheld the reservations. SC believed that reservations for OBC will uplift and improve the status of OBC population. SC believed that the caste could be taken as an indicator for backwardness
Personally I don't think that caste be used as a parameter to define backwardness. It should be only economic status that should be used for backwardness. As in 21st century castes do not really matter in many social issues or for social status.
Using caste alone as backwardness is not appropriate. Using caste for reservation results in unfair treatment to other castes. Also the performance of government and public sectors will suffer badly.
Also generations after generations ie., descendents after descendents of those who profited from reservations use reservations. If an IAS officer is selected using reservations, then his descendents need not be offered reservations. They are well off in social, educational and economic status.
