No, it was completely stupid by the Senators involved. It isn’t unlike what Serbians did with assassination of Arch Duke.

The Senators, such as Brutus, honestly believed that if Caesar was dead, the Republic would be restored and they would continue to enjoy their privileged status.

This was a fantasy due to many reasons.

First and foremost, Republic was almost certainly doomed after the death of the Gracchi brothers. There is no coincidence that soon after that you had Marius and Sull,a Cataline and many others. The simple reality was that Rome was by then nothing more than a military state run by the strongest general. The veneer of a lawful republic was very thinly disguised.

It was only a matter of time before a strongest general will rule the whole thing, without the hiding behind Consulship and propriety.

Secondly it was the “Boni” (the Good), primarily Cato, who created Caesar the dictator in the first place. Cato gave Caesar no choice, either to become a dictator or die (or be disgraced and exiled, which for someone like Caesar was same thing). He ensured that Caesar had no choice but to “roll the dice”. How can you justice doing something and than instead of taking responsibility for what you’ve done instead kill the object of your mistake?

Thirdly, Caesar wasn’t the only member of the Caesserian party. Mark Antony was far more dangerous opponent than Caesar was. Because Mark Antony didn’t care about the pleasantries that Caesar liked to observe. Hell quite the opposite in fact. Mark Antony was a true dictator, and yet the Boni let him lived.
That be like killing Hindenburg but leaving Hitler.
I am not mentioning Octavian as he was a non issue at the time of Caesar’s death.

Fourthly what those who killed Caesar wanted wasn’t some kind of Democracy, as often it is portrait, they wanted an oligarchy whereby the Nobles rule everybody beneath them. That by itself means that killing Caesar was immoral, as what they wanted was in fact immoral.

Finally, Caesar was the only person who actually had a chance to restore Republic. He seen the issues within the Republic and seen that solution was to include the populace. Now one may argue that he did so only so that he himself gains power from it, maybe. There is no way to argue this point as we can’t know what he really thought. I am on a side that says that while Caesar loved his honors, he actually never wanted to be a King. He wanted to be known as the Founder of Rome, and stabilize the Government.

We can’t know what would have happened if Caesar wasn’t assassinated, obviously, but we can say without shadow of a doubt that his death was by no means justifiable by moral, legal, or even simple pragmatic reasoning

hope it would be helpful
