No, he wasn't happy in ulapur.He lived in a place where he felt unconftorble, and there was even a slimy pond next to the cottage in which he lived. The following lines illustrate this.
He felt like a fish out of water in this remote village.
He would, however, have preferred a row of tall buildings instead.
The postmaster employed his free time gainfully by teaching the illiterate Ratan how to read and write. The little girl had nothing to do apart from the chores in his house, so her free time was utilized by learning the alphabet from him.
