was the railway network spread by the British in India from 1850’s onward? Why was there a need of for forest timber for spread of railways?

Yes.Timber was needed for the spread of railways because it was used for making railway tracks.It was also used for making the trains too.According to the survey during 1850s, for laying a mile of track,about 25,000 trees were cut down.
